Interview Tips

Thank you for your interest! We typically conduct an Experience Interview, a Career Interview, a Research Interview, and a Case Interview at the Venture Strategy Group. Some roles will have different interviews. We want to see you succeed. This page will help guide you through the interview process.

The Experience Interview

The Experience Interview is quite conversational. We celebrate diversity and value all experiences – this is the opportunity to let us know some vision of the future you would like to realize. It can be personal, societal, etc. How can we contribute to your career?

The Career Interview

We go through your CV or Résumé line by line with you to get a better understanding of the projects you have worked on. This is effectively the Executive Branding and Investor Preparedness Workshop we offer. We take your career very seriously and we want to make sure we can identify the best career opportunities for you while you are working with us. We use the Context-Problem-Method-Results framework to help you articulate your work. Most candidates leave the session with a better CV. We may ask you to send a revised CV before the next round of interviews. This article explains how you can apply the framework to your CV: https://unbuiltlabs.com/preparing-your-resume/

The Research Interview

How might your research help us understand the future of an industry? This can be any industry you are interested in.

A few guiding questions:

  • What forces are at play within the industry?

  • What do we know about those forces?

  • What are some of the relevant global, historical, social factors that are influencing those forces?

  • What are some of the challenges of operating in that industry?

  • What are some of the emerging ideas and companies?

  • What are some of the organizations that are setting new ethical or sustainable standards for the industry?

We love hearing about new ideas and angles on topics. Feel free to cite obscure academic theories! We recommend exploring our Think Tank page: https://UnbuiltLabs.com

The Case Interview

We use past client problems as starting points to the conversation. Most problems have at least one twist. For example, a marketing problem turns out to be a UX problem. Because most roles at the VS Group are client-facing, we recommend paying special attention to these areas:

  • Conflicts of interest disclosures: might your recommendation be biased in anyway?

  • Limitations of recommendations: in what scenario would your recommendation change?

  • Implementation challenges: what are some of the things clients should pay special attention to?

  • The people dimension: are there culture challenges that the client might need to overcome?

  • The legal dimension: we do not offer legal advice, but are there areas that you would remind your client to look into? For example, anti-spam laws, GDPR, CCPA etc.

We may also ask you to conduct a 10 minute presentation of a project you have worked on. Good signposting, well-designed slides will help. We also recommend using the Context-Problem-Method-Results framework to structure your presentation.
